DOWRY--- Pause it

Dear Friends

As we all know that Social evils like dowry system, child abuse, drug abuse are the main bane of the society. You, as a part of the society can take steps to prevent them and make the society a better place to live in. The evils of the dowry system have left some Indian couples with a marked preference for sons. Worried by soaring marriage costs, the girl child is still unwanted by some parents who opt for illegal prenatal sex-determination tests just to abort the female foetus.

The monetary status of the articles, currency, estate and other things brought by a woman to her husband after marriage is defined by the word dowry or trousseau. Dowry is an age old custom which prevails all over human society, in one form or the other. There are many regulations and codes of conduct in different cultures commanding the way dowry should be handled. Mehr or bride price is the exact opposite of dowry, where the boy and his family have to pay a price to get a bride. The custom of dowry is still prevalent in India. It is an ancient Indian practice which has taken ugly proportions in modern times. It is more common in the northern part of the country. Dowry started as custom in the upper classes of Indian society, but became the bane of all classes and communities with time. Sanctioned dowry stimulates the emotion of greed, in man and undermines the true purpose of matrimony. Joint families are still a part of Indian society. An Indian girl marries to become a part of the boy’s extended family, unlike western countries where the man and woman marries to live alone and create their own financial independence. The social definition of family in India places an added burden on the girl’s family to pay a dowry. All dowry demands are made verbally in the form of customs and rituals, and these demands continue indefinitely beyond the extent of the wedding date. An inability to cater to these demands, then leads to domestic violence and abuse. A girl child is still not welcome in Indian families for the same reason. Bride burning for dowry is also very common in Indian society. Many married girls commit suicide due to monetary demands made by their in laws on their parents, and other family members. In conservative societies there is no way of escape for a woman whose life is in danger in her matrimonial home, due to dowry demands. She has to accept the physical and mental torture meted out to her in her husbands home with quiet resignation. This can prove fatal for her life. Orthodox Indian parents rarely take married girls back into their homes as it is considered a big disgrace.

Many NGOs have started campaigns against dowry harassment and are keeping a close watch on reported offences. Though law has provided stringent measures to curb this menace, society and you as a member of the society can do a lot to prevent offences of harassment, dowry death, etc., by taking the following steps:

· Start practising dowry prohibition in your family

· Educate the members of your family with the provisions of law – that demanding and accepting or giving dowry is an offence

· A woman is an important member of family and is entitled to all the rights and privileges a man enjoys

· Educate the members of your family and your neighbours to respect a woman’s rights and privileges

· If in any family there is a growing dispute between the in-laws and the lady, try to intervene to sort out the differences and educate them about the evils of dowry system. If they fail to listen to you, please inform the jurisdictional police and counselling centres

· Provide support and shelter to the lady in distress. If you cannot, please contact the Women organisations who can provide support in such cases

· Gather like-minded people who are fighting against this evil and gather public sympathy and support to ex-communicate the families where the evil persists

· In case you have any suspicion of ill treatment of a lady in any house, immediately inform the local Police. Ladies in distress, generally avoid showing their resentment to ill-treatment till it reaches a dangerous point leading to their being burnt to death

· Encourage women folk to raise their voice about their rights and to fight against dowry system

Let's save a girl child and stand against the genocide that is taking place in the society. Feticide is the most dastardly form of violence against women. Since the technology for sex determination first came into being, sex selective abortion has unleashed a saga of horror in India. In fact nature intended the womb to be a safe space place for nurturing and grooming the foetus before the child could take birth. But today, doctors have made it the most unsafe space for the female child by unleashing the terror of feticide. Today a girl child is several times more likely to be eliminated before birth in India than die of various causes in the first year of her existence.

So, what all we waiting for, its high time let stop dowry system with honesty and sincerity for the women of our nation. Lets Support the government programme and get attached to NGO’s who are trying there level best to come-over it.

Thanks

Regards

A walk to Remember ......

On the morning of 27th October 2010, I, a post graduate Dental Surgeon working in Delhi, arrived at 10 Janpath, home to India’s first political family- the Gandhi’s. The Gandhi family has been dominant in the Indian National Congress for most of India’s history since independence. Rahul Gandhi is the youngest member of the family to enter the politics. The son of Rajiv Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi represents the Amethi constituency and it was under him that the Indian Youth Congress and NSUI took shape and has grown exponentially. It was my association and interest in Indian Youth Congress that had brought me to this prestigious house. I belong to Kannauj district from UP, a place that has been politically dismantled by corrupt politicians who have started this trend of cast, money and power politics, while the local farmers are languishing for their bread and butter. I really wanted to give back to my hometown. All required security checks were done and I finally got to meet Mr. Gandhi, Gene...
